Between the beginning of the year and the end-of-year standards-driven tests, formative assessment should be used to track students’ progress so that their performance on the summative assessment is not a surprise. Let’s examine the string of discrete sub-skills that we would need to teach, and assess, in order to help students meet the standard. Experienced teachers will recognize that each step on the diagram is likely its own lesson—or series of lessons. Each skill must be taught, practiced, and assessed separately. Trying to assess all of these skills at the same time would be overwhelming for the students and for us. Therefore, each skill will need its own formative assessments. In Action Formative assessment does not have to be cumbersome. Let’s look at how a Ms. Chan, a second-grade teacher, weaves formative assessment into her small-group reading lesson, and identifies students’ ZPDs, all while keeping the grade-level standard in mind. LESSON OUTLINE DATE: 3/22 TEXT: Are You a Mammal? STANDARD: Identify and use various features of a nonfiction text (e.g., subheadings, bolded words, glossaries, table of contents, digital menus and links) to find information in a text LESSON OBJECTIVES: Locate subheadings and the table of contents; identify the purpose of subheadings and the table of contents ASSESSMENT: Formative checklist GROUP A MEMBERS: Jamie, Alejandro, Lisa Ms. Chan knows that her students must be able to meet the complex literacy standard listed above by the end of the year. So, this week, she has chosen to teach two sub-skills involved in the standard. GOAL: Identify and use various features of a nonfiction text to find information in a text (e.g., subheadings, bolded words, glossaries, table of contents, digital menus and links) Step 1. Comprehend the text, including identifying key facts and details. Step 2. Identify various features of printed and digital texts (e.g., subheadings, bolded words, glossaries, table of contents, digital menus and links). Step 3. Describe the purpose(s) of each text features. Step 4. Decide which text feature(s) will help locate a given piece of information. Step 5. Combine knowledge of text features with other knowledge of the text. 4 © Benchmark Education Company, LLC 3 Putting It in Perspective 6 Chapter 1: Using Assessment to Create Teachable Moments 11 Chapter 2: Choosing Assessments Strategically 20 Chapter 3: Assessing with Observation, Questioning, and Running Records 29 Chapter 4: Assessing Other Factors that Influence Reading Development 35 Chapter 5: Using Self-Assessment to Guide Student Learning 44 Chapter 6: Providing Accommodations 62 References 63 Glossary 64 Appendix Table of Contents MEANINGFUL READING ASSESSMENT MEANINGFUL READING ASSESSMENT 7 ½ " x 9", 96 pages, full colorY33668 $21.95 Peter Afflerbach, Ph.D., is Professor of Reading in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership at the University of Maryland.
